High definition plasma televisions offer a higher resolution to that of a normal plasma television, the higher the resolution a plasma screen has the better quality the picture will be (but remember that the resolution is not the only determining factor in the pictures quality).

The important thing with high definition is the fact that you will only see the quality increase on material that is in the high definition format, normal television (digital or analogue) and normal DVD's will look the same on an high definition plasma screen. Buying a high definition television is more of a future investment as over time more and more material will be produced in high definition so you would then see the increase in quality, soon most television channels and DVD's will be produced in high definition so if you are buying a new plasma television it is worth considering as plasma screens are expensive and you don't want it becoming obsolete in a few years.

The actual quality increase on a high definition plasma screen is around 15%, this assumes that everything else is the same though such as the contract ratio, brightness, screen size and screen manufacturer. This is important as there are lots of factors that contribute to a plasma television's quality, you could buy a high definition plasma screen but if it has lower qualities in the contrast ratio, brightness and manufacturing quality then it may be no better than a standard plasma screen. When the television channels and DVD's are produced in high definition it will be well worth owning a high definition plasma screen though as there will be a significant quality increase, high definition plasma screens are also much better for displaying computer images such as from laptops or games consoles.
